Paul & Hannah honeymoon van: Camplify success story

Having purchased their campervan ‘ Billy ’, Paul and his wife Hannah spent their honeymoon exploring France in their new home on wheels. The couple, who are both teachers, have now turned their campervan into a side-hustle by renting it out through Camplify.

Where does your interest in vanlife come from?

Paul and Hannah camped a lot during their Uni days. He did a degree in Outdoor Education. They loved going to Devon to camp and surf and spent a summer in Croyde working, camping & surfing.

They always thought they would love to have their own van & so instead of spending a lot of money on a honeymoon they decided to spend the money on a campervan and drive to France instead where they spent 3-4 weeks in the Biarritz region. The 'honeymoon' van is still the one they have today.

Do you get to go away in your van often, and who do you go with?

Both Paul, Hannah and their children Seb (6) and Tilly (4) go away regularly in the van, more recently in the UK, although Seb has been to France. They are both teachers so holidays are always in school holidays - mid terms and summer time. They've recently been to the Isle of Wight and loved it.

Why did you decide to join Camplify?

Paul and Hannah were looking at how to make some additional income around their jobs and had considered buying a classic campervan to hire out for weddings and honeymoons but the outlay was big so they thought why not just hire out the van they own.

What are your future ambitions for your Camplify business?

Last year was the first year and so, to date, it has been about covering the cost of the van (MOT, service etc). Long term they would like to be able to buy a second van and hire both out. Any additional income would be nice for them to spoil themselves a little - pay for a holiday, that type of thing.

What do you enjoy most about the experience?

Meeting people and showing them around the campervan. Seeing the hirers getting excited about going away in the van reminds Paul how much he loves the van and how exciting these trips can be. He was anxious about hiring it out but the first hirers (came through us - a father and son) were so nice and looked after the van very well and he felt far more relaxed about it after that.

He's realised hirers are quite like-minded people (want something different, love the outdoors). He had 10 hires last year and only one hirer wasn't great but other than that everyone has been lovely.
