How to choose the best 12V TV for your motorhome

With so many models out there, it can be difficult to know what to look out for. Follow our tips to choose the best 12V TV for your motorhome!

Space and size

All ready for bed with a wall-mounted TV in Harper, Lancashire

It’s not just the size of the screen you need to consider when buying your motorhome TV – think about the available space too. A 32-inch TV in a smaller vehicle is probably not a good idea, especially if the only space for the TV is on the only table. Around 19 to 21 inches is our recommended size for motorhome TVs – look for an edge to edge display to maximise your screen size, as shown in brands like Avtex.

Reception

Most TVs these days come with built-in satellite receivers and tuners to pick up Freeview and other channels – this is definitely the easiest way to get the channels you want! To set it all up, look for a motorhome TV with a one-button tuning system (AQT), and consider a standalone aerial booster amplifier if you need to strengthen the TV signal.

Energy efficiency

More so than at home, a TV designed to be used in a motorhome or RV needs to be highly energy-efficient, which means running on the 12V system of your motorhome. Unless you’re using electric hook-up at a campsite every night, a standard (240V) TV will quickly drain your motorhome battery – always look for a 12V TV and always make sure it’s completely switched off when not in use.

Wifi

Motorhome example - M Lady, Leeds

You can download films or other content onto a USB stick to watch on your TV, but you might want to stream content straight from iPlayer, Netflix etc. A smart TV with built-in wifi connectivity will see you sorted.

Learn how to get wifi in a motorhome .

Satellite tuner

If you use a satellite dish, there’s no need to carry the tuning box with you – look for a motorhome TV with a built-in satellite tuner.

DVD player

A DVD player mightn’t be essential if your motorhome TV is wifi connected and able to stream content. That said, parents might want to bring one or two favourite DVDs for surefire peace and quiet.

USB port and HDMI input

Motorhome example - Mirage, West Sussex

A USB stick with decent storage can be used to record live TV or to load up on your favourite shows at home to watch later. HDMI inputs are useful as they allow games consoles or other external devices to connect to the TV.

Mounting

Will you fit your TV on the worktop or mount it on the wall with a TV bracket? Wall-mounted TVs are safer in moving vehicles, so allow space for this when designing your motorhome. (See ourtips on motorhome conversions blog if you’re just starting out!)

Weight

Almost all TVs manufactured these days are slim and lightweight but do check the weight if the TV you want is a bigger size. Motorhome TVs generally range from 1.5kg to around 4.5kg in weight.

Do I need a 12V TV for my motorhome?

Motorhome example - Bertha, N Ireland

You might be wondering why we’re talking about “12V” TVs – won’t a spare portable TV from your housework instead?

Unfortunately, not always! As mentioned above, a standard domestic TV (which generally runs on 240-volts) will be much too powerful for a 12-volt motorhome leisure battery, risking short-circuiting or fire.

A 12-volt motorhome TV is the easiest and most portable type possible without using mains power/electric hook-up, as it’s powered directly from the motorhome leisure battery.

12V TVs are also sturdier against bumps and vibrations, and continue to work well in cold or humid temperatures without causing a short circuit – they’re built for travelling!

Tip: Use a solar panel charging kit for your batteries to keep your TV powered throughout all your trips.
