Frequently asked questions

Is a campervan holiday really as relaxing as everyone says?

In a word: yes. A campervan holiday means total freedom — no fixed hotel bookings, no rigid itineraries. Wake up by the sea, in the countryside or beside a mountain lake. With a fully equipped campervan from Camplify, you have everything you need on board: kitchen, bed, sometimes even a shower. And because you collect directly from the owner, you get personal tips and a vehicle prepared with care.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Bristol?

Prices vary by season and vehicle type. On Camplify, you'll find campervans from around £60 per night and motorhomes from around £80 per night. A 12% booking fee (plus VAT) and an owner service fee (typically around £25) are added per booking. Because you're hiring from private owners, you'll often find better value than traditional hire companies.

What driving licence do I need for a campervan?

You'll need a full, valid UK driving licence held for at least 2 years. Category B covers most campervans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg; larger motorhomes may require C1. Drivers must be aged 25–75. Camplify runs a DVLA check on every hirer before the van goes out on hire.

How does collection work?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home. You'll receive the exact address before the booking, so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car. Bring your driving licence to the handover. The owner will walk you through the vehicle and complete a pre-hire checklist together.

Can I take the campervan abroad?

Camplify Flex cover extends to EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. You'll need a VE103 certificate (requested by the owner) and a motor insurance certificate. Check with the owner, arrange your own ferry or Channel Tunnel crossing and make sure the vehicle's tax and MOT are up to date.

What's included in the hire?

Every Camplify booking includes Damage Protection Cover and 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Most owners also include bedding, kitchen equipment and camping chairs — check the listing for full details. Fuel, tolls, campsite fees and mileage over 1,000 miles (charged at 45p per mile) are your responsibility.

Can I bring my dog?

Many owners welcome pets — look for the pet-friendly filter when searching. If it's not mentioned, simply message the owner to ask. Some may charge a small cleaning fee.

Campervan, motorhome or caravan — which is right for me?

Campervans are compact and easy to drive — perfect for couples or weekend escapes. Motorhomes offer more space with separate sleeping, cooking and sometimes shower areas — ideal for families. Caravans give you a cosy home-from-home that stays put while you explore by car.

How does booking work on Camplify?

Search for a location and dates, then send a booking request to the owner. Once approved, you pay 25 % to secure the booking — the balance is taken automatically 30 days before your trip (or immediately if you book within 30 days). Arrange collection details through the Camplify messaging system.

What happens if the campervan breaks down?

Every booking includes 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Call 0333 202 1872 and quote reference CAMP01 — RAC will arrange roadside recovery at no cost to you. Let the owner know too.

Can someone else drive too?

Yes — additional drivers no longer need a separate Camplify account. They must meet the insurer's eligibility requirements and bring a valid driving licence to the handover. Check the Flex insurance eligibility page for details.

How does insurance work?

Damage Protection Cover is included with every Camplify booking. The standard excess ranges from £500 to £2,000 on Flex bookings, but you can reduce it with a Silver or Gold excess package at checkout.

Where exactly do I pick up the campervan in Bristol?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home in Bristol. You'll receive the exact address before the booking so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car.

How quickly can I reach my destination from Bristol?

From Bristol you can reach stunning destinations: in the Cotswolds ca. 1h, in Devon ca. 2h, in Cornwall ca. 3h, Brittany ca. ferry + 6h.

Explore Bristol — before your adventure begins

Picking up your campervan in Bristol? Take a moment to explore the city first. Before you hit the road, a last wander is well worth it — Bristol has plenty to offer to build the excitement for the journey ahead.

The Bristol vibe

Bristol runs on independent spirit. Stokes Croft is the city's unofficial gallery, its buildings covered in murals that shift with the seasons, while the Watershed on the Harbourside has been a centre for film and digital arts since the 1980s. Clifton Village, perched above the Avon Gorge, has a distinctly different character with its Georgian crescents and independent boutiques along Boyces Avenue and Princess Victoria Street. The Arnolfini gallery on Narrow Quay and the Tobacco Factory theatre in Southville anchor a cultural scene that thrives on doing things differently. Before picking up a campervan and heading towards the Somerset coast, Bristol gives you plenty of reasons to linger.

Local food and markets

St Nicholas Market in the old city, known locally as St Nick's, has been trading since 1743 and houses food stalls serving everything from West Indian curries to artisan sourdough. Wapping Wharf, built from shipping containers along the harbourside, has become a destination for street food and local produce shops. For properly stocking up your campervan, Better Food on Gloucester Road runs one of Bristol's original organic grocers, and the Tobacco Factory Sunday Market in Southville brings together local growers and bakers. Gloucester Road itself stretches for over a mile of independent shops, making it one of the longest runs of independents in the country.

Parks and green spaces

The Downs stretch across 400 acres of open grassland above the Avon Gorge, with views towards the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the wooded slopes of Leigh Woods on the opposite bank. Leigh Woods itself, managed by the National Trust, offers quiet trails through ancient woodland just minutes from the city centre. The harbourside path connects the centre to Ashton Court Estate, a sprawling deer park perfect for a morning walk. Brandon Hill, tucked behind Park Street and home to the Cabot Tower, is one of the oldest public parks in the country and a favourite spot for locals to sit and watch the sun set over the city before heading off on the road.

  • Kitchenette with hob, sink and fridge

  • Comfortable sleeping areas with bedding or sleeping bag option

  • Shower and WC (on many models)

  • Camping chairs, table and awning for outdoors

Little extras for an unforgettable experience
