Frequently asked questions

Is a campervan holiday really as relaxing as everyone says?

In a word: yes. A campervan holiday means total freedom — no fixed hotel bookings, no rigid itineraries. Wake up by the sea, in the countryside or beside a mountain lake. With a fully equipped campervan from Camplify, you have everything you need on board: kitchen, bed, sometimes even a shower. And because you collect directly from the owner, you get personal tips and a vehicle prepared with care.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Leeds?

Prices vary by season and vehicle type. On Camplify, you'll find campervans from around £60 per night and motorhomes from around £80 per night. A 12% booking fee (plus VAT) and an owner service fee (typically around £25) are added per booking. Because you're hiring from private owners, you'll often find better value than traditional hire companies.

What driving licence do I need for a campervan?

You'll need a full, valid UK driving licence held for at least 2 years. Category B covers most campervans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg; larger motorhomes may require C1. Drivers must be aged 25–75. Camplify runs a DVLA check on every hirer before the van goes out on hire.

How does collection work?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home. You'll receive the exact address before the booking, so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car. Bring your driving licence to the handover. The owner will walk you through the vehicle and complete a pre-hire checklist together.

Can I take the campervan abroad?

Camplify Flex cover extends to EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. You'll need a VE103 certificate (requested by the owner) and a motor insurance certificate. Check with the owner, arrange your own ferry or Channel Tunnel crossing and make sure the vehicle's tax and MOT are up to date.

What's included in the hire?

Every Camplify booking includes Damage Protection Cover and 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Most owners also include bedding, kitchen equipment and camping chairs — check the listing for full details. Fuel, tolls, campsite fees and mileage over 1,000 miles (charged at 45p per mile) are your responsibility.

Can I bring my dog?

Many owners welcome pets — look for the pet-friendly filter when searching. If it's not mentioned, simply message the owner to ask. Some may charge a small cleaning fee.

Campervan, motorhome or caravan — which is right for me?

Campervans are compact and easy to drive — perfect for couples or weekend escapes. Motorhomes offer more space with separate sleeping, cooking and sometimes shower areas — ideal for families. Caravans give you a cosy home-from-home that stays put while you explore by car.

How does booking work on Camplify?

Search for a location and dates, then send a booking request to the owner. Once approved, you pay 25 % to secure the booking — the balance is taken automatically 30 days before your trip (or immediately if you book within 30 days). Arrange collection details through the Camplify messaging system.

What happens if the campervan breaks down?

Every booking includes 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Call 0333 202 1872 and quote reference CAMP01 — RAC will arrange roadside recovery at no cost to you. Let the owner know too.

Can someone else drive too?

Yes — additional drivers no longer need a separate Camplify account. They must meet the insurer's eligibility requirements and bring a valid driving licence to the handover. Check the Flex insurance eligibility page for details.

How does insurance work?

Damage Protection Cover is included with every Camplify booking. The standard excess ranges from £500 to £2,000 on Flex bookings, but you can reduce it with a Silver or Gold excess package at checkout.

Where exactly do I pick up the campervan in Leeds?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home in Leeds. You'll receive the exact address before the booking so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car.

How quickly can I reach my destination from Leeds?

From Leeds you can reach stunning destinations: in the Yorkshire Dales ca. 1h, in the Peak District ca. 1.5h, in the Lake District ca. 2h, on the North Wales Coast ca. 3h.

Explore Leeds — before your adventure begins

Picking up your campervan in Leeds? Take a moment to explore the city first. Before you hit the road, a last wander is well worth it — Leeds has plenty to offer to build the excitement for the journey ahead.

The Leeds vibe

Leeds carries an industrial confidence that shows in its grand Victorian arcades and converted mill buildings. The Corn Exchange, a striking oval building on Call Lane, houses independent shops beneath its domed roof, while the neighbouring streets of the Calls and Kirkgate have been quietly reinventing themselves with galleries, cafes, and small studios. The Leeds Art Gallery on The Headrow holds one of the strongest collections of twentieth-century British art outside London, and the Henry Moore Institute next door offers free sculpture exhibitions. Meanwood and Chapel Allerton to the north have grown into distinct neighbourhood centres with their own character. Taking time to explore beyond the city centre gives you a sense of why people are genuinely proud to be from Leeds before you head off in your campervan towards the Dales.

Local food and markets

Kirkgate Market has occupied its site since 1857 and claims to be the largest covered market in Europe. The food hall section sells everything from tripe to tropical fruit, and the surrounding stalls offer the kind of variety that supermarkets cannot replicate. Leeds Dock hosts a weekend food market, and the independent delis along North Street in Sheepscar serve the city's growing community of food-conscious shoppers. For stocking up your campervan, George and Joseph cheesemongers in Chapel Allerton and the Friends of Ham charcuterie shop on New Station Street both specialise in local and British produce. The curry houses along the Otley Road corridor in Headingley are a Leeds institution.

Parks and green spaces

Roundhay Park in the north-east covers over 700 acres of parkland, lakes, and woodland, with Waterloo Lake and the canal gardens offering a proper day out within the city. The Meanwood Valley Trail runs from the city centre through Meanwood Park and out towards Golden Acre Park, following the beck through woodland that feels miles from anywhere. Temple Newsam, an Elizabethan mansion on the eastern edge, is surrounded by a working farm and over 900 acres of grounds. Otley Chevin, just beyond the city boundary, provides elevated views across Wharfedale and is a popular spot for a sunrise walk before setting off on a motorhome trip into the Yorkshire countryside.
