Frequently asked questions

Is a campervan holiday really as relaxing as everyone says?

In a word: yes. A campervan holiday means total freedom — no fixed hotel bookings, no rigid itineraries. Wake up by the sea, in the countryside or beside a mountain lake. With a fully equipped campervan from Camplify, you have everything you need on board: kitchen, bed, sometimes even a shower. And because you collect directly from the owner, you get personal tips and a vehicle prepared with care.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Edinburgh?

Prices vary by season and vehicle type. On Camplify, you'll find campervans from around £60 per night and motorhomes from around £80 per night. A 12% booking fee (plus VAT) and an owner service fee (typically around £25) are added per booking. Because you're hiring from private owners, you'll often find better value than traditional hire companies.

What driving licence do I need for a campervan?

You'll need a full, valid UK driving licence held for at least 2 years. Category B covers most campervans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg; larger motorhomes may require C1. Drivers must be aged 25–75. Camplify runs a DVLA check on every hirer before the van goes out on hire.

How does collection work?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home. You'll receive the exact address before the booking, so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car. Bring your driving licence to the handover. The owner will walk you through the vehicle and complete a pre-hire checklist together.

Can I take the campervan abroad?

Camplify Flex cover extends to EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. You'll need a VE103 certificate (requested by the owner) and a motor insurance certificate. Check with the owner, arrange your own ferry or Channel Tunnel crossing and make sure the vehicle's tax and MOT are up to date.

What's included in the hire?

Every Camplify booking includes Damage Protection Cover and 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Most owners also include bedding, kitchen equipment and camping chairs — check the listing for full details. Fuel, tolls, campsite fees and mileage over 1,000 miles (charged at 45p per mile) are your responsibility.

Can I bring my dog?

Many owners welcome pets — look for the pet-friendly filter when searching. If it's not mentioned, simply message the owner to ask. Some may charge a small cleaning fee.

Campervan, motorhome or caravan — which is right for me?

Campervans are compact and easy to drive — perfect for couples or weekend escapes. Motorhomes offer more space with separate sleeping, cooking and sometimes shower areas — ideal for families. Caravans give you a cosy home-from-home that stays put while you explore by car.

How does booking work on Camplify?

Search for a location and dates, then send a booking request to the owner. Once approved, you pay 25 % to secure the booking — the balance is taken automatically 30 days before your trip (or immediately if you book within 30 days). Arrange collection details through the Camplify messaging system.

What happens if the campervan breaks down?

Every booking includes 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Call 0333 202 1872 and quote reference CAMP01 — RAC will arrange roadside recovery at no cost to you. Let the owner know too.

Can someone else drive too?

Yes — additional drivers no longer need a separate Camplify account. They must meet the insurer's eligibility requirements and bring a valid driving licence to the handover. Check the Flex insurance eligibility page for details.

How does insurance work?

Damage Protection Cover is included with every Camplify booking. The standard excess ranges from £500 to £2,000 on Flex bookings, but you can reduce it with a Silver or Gold excess package at checkout.

Where exactly do I pick up the campervan in Edinburgh?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home in Edinburgh. You'll receive the exact address before the booking so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car.

How quickly can I reach my destination from Edinburgh?

From Edinburgh you can reach stunning destinations: in the Scottish Borders ca. 1h, Cairngorms ca. 2h, in the Scottish Highlands ca. 2.5h, on the North Coast 500 ca. 4h.

Explore Edinburgh — before your adventure begins

Picking up your campervan in Edinburgh? Take a moment to explore the city first. Before you hit the road, a last wander is well worth it — Edinburgh has plenty to offer to build the excitement for the journey ahead.

The Edinburgh vibe

Edinburgh feels like two cities layered on top of each other. The Old Town's closes and wynds, like Advocates Close and Fleshmarket Close off the Royal Mile, hide pubs, print shops, and tiny galleries behind unassuming doorways. The Georgian New Town, with its symmetry along Heriot Row and Moray Place, offers a completely different atmosphere of elegant restraint. Leith, the old port district, has carved out its own identity with converted warehouses, independent cinemas at the Cameo on Tollcross, and a waterfront that feels increasingly confident. Stockbridge, tucked in the valley below the New Town, has a village character with charity bookshops and neighbourhood cafes along Raeburn Place. A day exploring these layers gives you a proper sense of the city before heading north in your campervan.

Local food and markets

Stockbridge Market runs every Sunday on Saunders Street, bringing together Scottish producers selling venison, artisan oatcakes, and handmade tablet. Valvona and Crolla on Elm Row has been Edinburgh's Italian deli since 1934, stocking everything from Parmigiano to Scottish-made pasta. I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger on Victoria Street specialises in farmhouse cheeses from across Scotland and beyond, and their counter is worth a visit even if you are only browsing. For stocking up the campervan larder, the independent food shops along Bruntsfield Place and Marchmont Road offer quality bread, local honey, and craft beer from Edinburgh's growing brewery scene.

Parks and green spaces

Arthur's Seat rises 251 metres from Holyrood Park, and the walk up from St Margaret's Loch takes about 45 minutes. The views from the summit stretch from the Pentland Hills to the Firth of Forth and across to Fife. Calton Hill, a shorter climb from the east end of Princes Street, offers a different vantage point with its collection of monuments and the old City Observatory. The Water of Leith Walkway follows the river for 12 miles through the city, passing through Dean Village, where old mill buildings crowd the water's edge in a scene that feels remarkably rural. The Royal Botanic Garden in Inverleith spreads across 70 acres and is a calm start to any morning before setting off towards the Highlands.
