Frequently asked questions

Is a campervan holiday really as relaxing as everyone says?

In a word: yes. A campervan holiday means total freedom — no fixed hotel bookings, no rigid itineraries. Wake up by the sea, in the countryside or beside a mountain lake. With a fully equipped campervan from Camplify, you have everything you need on board: kitchen, bed, sometimes even a shower. And because you collect directly from the owner, you get personal tips and a vehicle prepared with care.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Prices vary by season and vehicle type. On Camplify, you'll find campervans from around £60 per night and motorhomes from around £80 per night. A 12% booking fee (plus VAT) and an owner service fee (typically around £25) are added per booking. Because you're hiring from private owners, you'll often find better value than traditional hire companies.

What driving licence do I need for a campervan?

You'll need a full, valid UK driving licence held for at least 2 years. Category B covers most campervans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg; larger motorhomes may require C1. Drivers must be aged 25–75. Camplify runs a DVLA check on every hirer before the van goes out on hire.

How does collection work?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home. You'll receive the exact address before the booking, so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car. Bring your driving licence to the handover. The owner will walk you through the vehicle and complete a pre-hire checklist together.

Can I take the campervan abroad?

Camplify Flex cover extends to EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. You'll need a VE103 certificate (requested by the owner) and a motor insurance certificate. Check with the owner, arrange your own ferry or Channel Tunnel crossing and make sure the vehicle's tax and MOT are up to date.

What's included in the hire?

Every Camplify booking includes Damage Protection Cover and 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Most owners also include bedding, kitchen equipment and camping chairs — check the listing for full details. Fuel, tolls, campsite fees and mileage over 1,000 miles (charged at 45p per mile) are your responsibility.

Can I bring my dog?

Many owners welcome pets — look for the pet-friendly filter when searching. If it's not mentioned, simply message the owner to ask. Some may charge a small cleaning fee.

Campervan, motorhome or caravan — which is right for me?

Campervans are compact and easy to drive — perfect for couples or weekend escapes. Motorhomes offer more space with separate sleeping, cooking and sometimes shower areas — ideal for families. Caravans give you a cosy home-from-home that stays put while you explore by car.

How does booking work on Camplify?

Search for a location and dates, then send a booking request to the owner. Once approved, you pay 25 % to secure the booking — the balance is taken automatically 30 days before your trip (or immediately if you book within 30 days). Arrange collection details through the Camplify messaging system.

What happens if the campervan breaks down?

Every booking includes 24/7 RAC breakdown assistance. Call 0333 202 1872 and quote reference CAMP01 — RAC will arrange roadside recovery at no cost to you. Let the owner know too.

Can someone else drive too?

Yes — additional drivers no longer need a separate Camplify account. They must meet the insurer's eligibility requirements and bring a valid driving licence to the handover. Check the Flex insurance eligibility page for details.

How does insurance work?

Damage Protection Cover is included with every Camplify booking. The standard excess ranges from £500 to £2,000 on Flex bookings, but you can reduce it with a Silver or Gold excess package at checkout.

Where exactly do I pick up the campervan in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Collection is directly from the owner — usually at their home in Newcastle upon Tyne. You'll receive the exact address before the booking so you can plan whether to arrive by public transport, taxi or your own car.

How quickly can I reach my destination from Newcastle upon Tyne?

Explore Newcastle upon Tyne — before your adventure begins

Picking up your campervan in Newcastle upon Tyne? Take a moment to explore the city first. Before you hit the road, a last wander is well worth it — Newcastle upon Tyne has plenty to offer to build the excitement for the journey ahead.

The Newcastle upon Tyne vibe

Newcastle has a loyal, self-assured character that comes through in everything from the curve of Grey Street, often called the finest street in England, to the packed terraces at St James' Park visible from almost every vantage point in the city. The Ouseburn Valley, a former industrial neighbourhood along the burn, has become a creative quarter with studios, galleries like the Biscuit Factory and Mushroom Works, and live music venues in converted warehouses. The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on the Gateshead quayside, housed in a former flour mill, anchors the Tyneside arts scene alongside the Sage concert hall next door. The bridges linking Newcastle and Gateshead, from the Tyne Bridge to the tilting Millennium Bridge, create one of the striking urban waterfronts in the country. It is a city that leaves an impression before you head north in your campervan.

Local food and markets

Grainger Market, beneath the Grainger Town rooftops, has traded since 1835 and houses over 100 stalls selling everything from fresh fish to stottie cakes. The Quayside Market runs along the river every Sunday with local food producers, crafts, and street food. Ouseburn has developed its own food identity, with artisan bakeries and the Ouseburn Farm shop sitting alongside microbreweries. For loading up the campervan, Fenwick Food Hall on Northumberland Street offers quality provisions, and the fishmongers at North Shields Fish Quay, a short drive east, sell the morning's catch directly from the boats. The region's baking tradition remains strong, with proper pease pudding and ham still a staple.

Parks and green spaces

Jesmond Dene is Newcastle's hidden treasure, a narrow wooded valley carved by the Ouseburn that runs for over a mile through the Jesmond neighbourhood with waterfalls, stone bridges, and a pets corner. Town Moor, stretching north from the city centre, covers over 1,000 acres of open grassland where cattle still graze under ancient commoners' rights. Leazes Park, beside St James' Park, was one of the first purpose-built parks in the country and offers a quiet lakeside walk minutes from the city centre. The Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail begins nearby at Wallsend, and even walking the first few miles along the Tyne offers a sense of the landscape that stretches ahead on a campervan trip into Northumberland.
