Some great routes for exploring Scotland in a motorhome
The North Coast 500
The North Coast 500 or NC500 through the Scottish Highlands is hailed as one of the top five coastal routes in the world. Starting and finishing at Inverness Castle, the route includes Ullapool, John O’Groats, Dornach, Thurso and Applecross among many other stunning highlights. Check out our detailedNC500 road trip guide for info and itineraries.
Edinburgh and Loch Lomond loop
Covering about 260 miles, this 3-day or 5-day route starts and finishes in Edinburgh, driving north to Pitlochry and Aberfeldy then west to Inveraray across the top of the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. The route then cuts through the park to Loch Lomond, and then on to Glasgow, before returning to Edinburgh on the final day.
Edinburgh and islands
If you have a bit more time, extend the trip above to take in the gorgeous Isle of Skye, the biggest island of the Inner Hebrides. Capital Portree, Dunvegan Castle and the Museum of the Isles are all highly recommended. This trip also allows for time at the coastal town of Oban, where boat trips are available to other islands, and passes both Glen Coe and Fort William, both must-sees.

Tips for touring Scotland in a motorhome
Decide on season
Scotland is beautiful at any time of year, and a Scottish motorhome trip should be just as enjoyable in autumn or winter as summer or spring. But do be aware of road and condition differences in the colder months, such as the sharp decrease in daylight hours in winter and the need to hire an appropriate motorhome/bring appropriate clothing and other kit.
We cover the year-round aspects oftouring Scotland in a motorhome in our guide here.
Plan in advance
Some attractions may not be open in low season, or you may find that bars, restaurants etc aren’t open in low season in very rural areas. You’ll also need to plan well in advance if you want to visit Scotland during famous and popular events like Hogmanay or the Edinburgh festivals.
Get off the beaten track
Scotland is a spectacularly scenic country, especially around its Highlands, coast and national parks. We recommend incorporating at least a few wild camping nights into any Scotland trip: ourmotorhomes in Scotland include plenty of off-road options.
