Considerations when choosing the best wheel clamp for a motorhome

The best wheel clamp for a motorhome depends on several factors – take these into account when researching wheel clamps:

Type of wheel clamp

Wheel clamps for motorhomes come in three types: triangular, claw and limpet. Triangle wheel clamps have metal arms which fit around the tyre. They’re extremely strong and usually highly visible even from a distance. However, they’re generally bulkier and heavier than other clamp types.

Claw wheel clamps work by using two parallel metal arms to fit inside and outside the wheel; and a metal chock then prevents the wheel from turning. These types of clamps are easy to apply, but can still be bulky.

Finally, limpet wheel clamps are secured to the wheel using bolts, and secured by a steel pole placed through a gap in the wheel rim. They’re compact, easily stored and very simple to use, but they’re not suitable for all motorhomes.

Alloy or steel wheels

Not all types of wheel clamps fit all styles of wheel. You’ll need to know your wheel type, i.e. alloy or steel, and double check that your best wheel clamp for a motorhome pick is compatible.

Size and weight

Obviously your wheel clamp has to fit your motorhome wheels! Check your motorhome manual or measure the wheel (rim and width) to make sure you buy a clamp to fit.

Weight is also important – wheel clamp reviews show that some people have difficulty fitting a wheel clamp that’s heavier than about 6kg. Look for a clamp with ease of use… but remember you don’t want the clamp to be easily removed.

Accreditation

We strongly recommend buying a police-approved wheel clamp. In the UK, this means a product marked as Sold Secure, with Gold as the highest level of security. The equivalent across Europe and internationally is Kiwa SCM, based in the Netherlands.

Make back the cost of your motorhome wheel clamp

The best wheel clamp for a motorhome (Sold Secure-accredited) should retail between around £100-300. Your wheel clamp should be just one part of your motorhome security devices too: a hitch lock, extra window locks, steering wheel locks and devices like alarms or trackers should all be part of your security arsenal. Budget for these as well as your chosen clamp, so you can have full peace of mind.
