The history of luxury campervans
The idea of motorhomes and campervans evolved from the horse-drawn covered wagons used by American pioneers in the 18th and 19th centuries. By the early 20th century, motorised homes on wheels had appeared, instantly popular and appealing as they were for leisure purposes rather than a necessary feature of moving across the country.
Since those early motorised vans took to the road, the campervan business has boomed. VW campers and American Winnebagos rolled off the production line in their thousands in the boom decades following World War 2, as motorised homes became affordable for many families in the 1950s and 1960s.
But it’s the rise of “glamping” (glamorous camping) from the 2000s onwards where the history of luxury campervans really takes off. Motorhome holidays were suddenly much more attractive to many people, even those who had never been on a campsite – which in turn led to a booming campervan sales market as well as increasingly luxurious facilities on campervans and motorhomes. Check driving licence requirements – some bigger motorhomes can only be driven on an A category licence.
