With Brits being encouraged to take their holidays at home this season, camping trips are the ideal option for many who want to get out into nature while also having the security of open-air and distancing. But why leave these energising surroundings once your holiday is over? Especially when many motorhomes and campsites now offer wifi and comfortable benchtops with a view to work from. We’re sharing our tips and tricks for a campervan workcation in the UK.

Enter the rise of the campervan ‘workcation’ – an extended trip where you can work remotely from your hired van while still enjoying the psychological and physical benefits of being surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, as well as take advantage of the nearby sights and attractions off the clock.

To help guide and inspire those considering a campervan ‘workcation’, we’ve compiled a short list of tips and tricks to help you get started, as well as five campsite examples that not only are amazing places to relax and enjoy nature but also to stay a little longer for a campervan workcation in the UK.

3 tips for working in a campervan

Tip # 1: The right equipment

Depending on your job, there are a few other gadgets you may want to bring along other than the basics of laptop, mouse, keyboard, and charger. Noise-canceling headphones are great for blocking out any distracting sounds around the campsite, while an external hard drive is always a good idea for occasions where the internet may be slow and you can’t save important projects online. If you are working while on the road and need to charge your laptop, don’t forget to bring a power converter to get the correct wattage for your device.

Tip # 2: Getting connected

Naturally, it’s a good idea to check ahead whether your chosen campsite destinations offer high-speed internet (and read online reviews for comments on its strength!), but there can be occasions where even the fastest wifi can fail you. If your chosen camper doesn’t come with wifi, investing in an upgraded mobile plan is the safest backup, either using your phone’s personal hotspot or setting up a mobile router. For more tips on how to do so, check out our guide about getting wifi on the go!

Tip # 3: Setting up to work

The beauty of remote working is the flexibility of getting away from the desk, however, you’ll still need a steady flat surface and decent chair to sit on. Setting yourself up inside at your camper table, or outside on a foldaway table will allow you to still enjoy the natural surroundings while being comfortable enough to work. Sun glare outside making it hard to see your screen? A campervan with an awning is your best friend, or you could try the newest technological hack: placing your laptop in an open cardboard box!

5 places to go for your campervan workcation in the UK

1. Ayr Holiday Park, St Ives

Located in the beautiful seaside town of St Ives in the southwest of Cornwall, and within half a mile from the famous Porthmeor beach, this campsite’s unique position offers stunning views across the bay and over the sea. Perfect for a welcome screen break for the eyes while taking advantage of the free high-speed wifi.

2. Castlerigg Hall Caravan and Camping Park, Keswick

The Lake District is also a favourite spot for many campers due to its rugged mountains and stunning lakes, including the 3 miles long Derwentwater at the foot of the Catbells. This elevated campsite is a great base from which to explore the many walking trails of the area when not soaking in the lake views while you work.

3. Moorcroft Holidays, Isle of North Uist

If you’re looking for something more on the remote side to get away from it all, while still staying connected, this site located on the Hebridean island of Uist offers the best of both worlds. Plan your working day around the numerous wildlife activities in the area such as fishing, hiking and birdwatching.

4. Tyn Cornel Camping, Snowdonia

Fancy the invigorating sounds of rushing water while reading through your morning mail? This riverside campsite on the eastern part of the majestic Snowdonia National Park allows easy access to both high-speed wifi and the winding river Tryweryn. Perfect for a post-work decompress through kayaking, canoeing, or whitewater rafting at the nearby The National White Water Centre.

5. Ocean Pitch, North Devon

Overlooking Croyde Bay beach, this relatively small but well-equipped seaside camping ground is perfect for surfing enthusiasts who want to catch a few early morning waves before settling down in the wifi area to work. And for those who aren’t seasoned pros already but looking to learn, the site offers both equipment hire as well as lessons with the affiliated surfing school next door.
