Summer is here and it's time to explore. Want to road trip like a royal? These destinations are a must-add to your route.

Destination # 1: Buckingham Palace, London
The Queen's official London residence and a working royal palace. Buckingham Palace is recognised around the world as the home of The Queen, and it’s well worth a visit. Sitting majestically in the center of St James’s park, with a steady stream of London cabs passing by the front gates, it channels the epitome of Royal Britain. And each year from July to October each year, visitors can walk through 19 of the magnificent State Rooms and explore the Palace's Garden.

Destination # 2: Windsor Castle, Berkshire
Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and the official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. The Queen lives at Windsor Castle which is said to be her favourite London residence. You can tell when she is home by looking at the flag pole above the famous Round Tower – the Royal Standard is raised as soon as she gets there and lowered once she leaves to be replaced by the Union Jack. Why not take a stroll up the ‘Long Walk’, a three mile long tree-lined avenue begins at the George IV Gateway at Windsor Castle and ends at the magnificent Copper Horse statue atop a hill, with spectacular views over the castle.

Destination # 3: Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire
Set against the backdrop of rural Warwickshire, Kenilworth Castle was the home of the Earl of Leicester Robert Dudley. A testament to a great love story, the castle was gifted to Robert by Queen Elizabeth I whom it was suspected was very much in love with him. Robert spent many years transforming the castle from a battle fort into a magnificent palace to show his gratitude. In present day, it is disused and stands as a ruin, but it is a powerful building steeped in history that is well worth a visit.
Destination # 4: Sandringham House, Norfolk
Sandringham is the country retreat of her Majesty the Queen, andwhere she spends Christmas each year. The setting is just beautiful, standing in a 20,000-acre estate in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Despite it’s royal heritage, there is a real sense of homeliness and family, having seen so many royals grow up here. The most spectacular time to visit Sandringham House is late spring/early summer when the landscaped gardens come into flower, abound with fantastically coloured rhododendrons and azaleas, the lawns are immaculately tendered and everything just looks amazing.

Destination # 5: Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh
Many don’t know it, but Edinburgh Castle is built on top of an extinct volcano! It is a powerful and imposing castle, sitting at the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and overlooking the city. Now home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th-century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland. It is often thought that Her Majesty stays at the castle, however, she resides at Holyroodhouse Palace, located at the other end of the Royal Mile. During 'Holyrood Week' the Queen lives at the Palace from the end of June to the beginning of July.

Destination # 6: Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire
Balmoral Castle has been a private Scottish home of the British Royal Family for over 150 years. Widely regarded as her favorite residence, Her Majesty the Queen and her family usually spend the final weeks of summer on the estate each year, entirely free of their Royal duties. The family have spent many hours horseriding around the grounds, having family barbeques, with the Queen even said to pitch in on the washing up. The spectacular, turret adorned Castle looks like something out of a fairy tale, and opens its grounds, gardens and ballroom to visitors during the winter months, once the family have departed.
