Tips for camping in North Wales with dogs
Many if not most places in the UK are super dog-friendly, and North Wales is no exception. But there are a few things to be aware of when camping with dogs – here’s our list, so you can keep your furry friend happy and safe!
Always check in advance that your campsite is dog-friendly
Most campsite booking agents these days allow users to filter for “dog friendly” when looking for sites. But do read the campsite listing carefully – some sites listed as dog friendly might not allow dogs in certain pitching areas, for example, or a pub campsite might not allow dogs in the bar.
Research vets and emergency vets before you leave
Hopefully, you and your dog will have an amazing adventure and return home happy after an awesome trip. But should an accident happen, you don’t want to be googling “emergency vets” by the side of the road… especially if the phone signal is poor. Make a list of North Wales vets and have it written down somewhere safe and easily accessible.
Bring a spare lead
Leads can easily be lost, particularly if you and your dog are hiking somewhere dogs can be let off lead. Having a spare lead – or even a piece of rope or string – will let you continue to take your dog with you.
Give your dog plenty of time to get used to the van
Your dog will likely just be mega excited to be off on a trip! But some dogs are a bit more nervous when it comes to unfamiliar things, and many dogs dislike vehicles in any case. Leave enough time for your van handover to let your dog snuffle around inside to his heart’s content. Add treats!
Focus on the familiar
Similarly, be sure to bring your dog’s usual bedding (basket and/or blankets), his food bowls, and any favourite toys from home. This is definitely the time to treat him to his favourite food!
Scoop the poop
Dog waste bags can be bought almost everywhere, but bring enough for your entire trip, just in case.

Bring a collapsible bowl and plenty of water
Lots of cafes, restaurants etc have water bowls outside, but obviously, you can’t rely on this if you’re going off the beaten track. If you and your dog are off hiking for the day, pack a collapsible water bowl so they don’t get thirsty.
Check your dog for ticks every night
Hiking in the countryside or woodland can leave your dog (and you!) vulnerable to ticks. Check every night that your dog (and you!) hasn’t picked up any ticks; if he has, use a tick remover tool right away.
Groom your dog regularly
Travelling can be mucky, especially if you’re hiking along the coast or spending time on beaches. Give your dog a good brushing and combing every evening as part of his night-time routine.
Make sure your dog is identifiable if lost
Your dog should always wear a collar with a tag giving your name and contact details, in case he gets lost. Bring one or two extras along with you.
Check regulations on each individual beach you plan to visit
Most beaches in North Wales are dog friendly, but a handful are not. Always check the rules for each beach when you arrive – a beach listed online as dog friendly, for example, may not allow dogs in at certain times over summer.
Use the ultimate pet-friendly packing list
Our camping checklist for dogs has everything else you need to know about what to bring when exploring the great outdoors with your furry friend!
