The most romantic places in the UK are scattered across our country; whether you want to drive around the wilds of Scotland, laze on the sandy beaches of Cornwall, fancy an active break or a cosy weekend away for a romantic anniversary.

And who needs hotels? Hire a van, a motorhome or a caravan and make your romantic break an adventure! Have fun, see as many places as possible and have a comfortable holiday with all you need for both of you.

It’s time to arrange all those holidays you’ve yearned for a long time.

Lake District

Lake District (pic by Diliff)

The biggest national park in England, the Lake District has plenty to offer for a romantic break or longer holiday. As there’s so much to see and do, it’s perfect for a road trip in a caravan or motorhome… and so beautifully scenic that it’s a gorgeous place to settle down for a static caravan holiday too.

Stay in a different caravan park in a different part of the Lake District every night – Keswick, Penrith and Carlisle are just a few options – or find a static park by the water at the likes of Windermere or Barrow-in-Furness.

Once you’re parked up, there are loads of Lake District activities and attractions for couples to pick from. We suggest taking out a boat on Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater or Derwent Water for active days, and sightseeing around Keswick, Kendal and the Wordsworth Museum for attractions. And don’t forget romantic dinners either: the Lake District has several Michelin restaurants and dozens of cosy pubs for intimate evenings.

Learn more about it in our guide of the best romantic places in the Lake District .

Peak District

Peak District

The Peak District National Park is the upland area of the southern Pennines, made up of sweeping moorland landscape and open space that’s just the thing for a British romantic getaway.

Hire a campervan or motorhome at Manchester, Derby, Sheffield or other northern cities to arrive at the Peak in style, arrange to visit as part of a longer road trip, or book a luxury static or romantic cottage as a base for a cosy couples’ holiday.

Like the Lake District, there are heaps of activity and attraction options once there, such as a visit to Chatsworth House, used as the location for Pemberley in the film of Pride and Prejudice ; having a picnic and a stroll to Love Lock Bridge at Bakewell, and walking hand in hand around Bradford Dale and Lathkill Dales.

Keep the romantic theme going into the evening too: the Peak District is a Dark Skies area and excellent for stargazing : Parsley Hay near Hartington, Minninglow at Pikehall, and Surprise View near Hathersage are the three main areas to spread out your picnic blanket.

Bourton-on-the-Water

The market town of Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire is such a beautiful spot it’s nicknamed the Venice of the Cotswolds. Its high street is edged by wide greens which the River Windrush flows through and five arched bridges cross the water, all just right for a romantic photo opportunity.

Hiker couples can combine their Bourton-on-the-Water romantic break with a Cotswolds walking holiday , like several long-distance trails including the Heart of England Way start or pass through the town.

Or if you’d prefer a more low-key ramble , have a day at Bourton’s Birdland Park and Gardens to see the birds of prey, penguins and parrots and to picnic by the salmon pond.

Bourton’s extremely convenient for exploring the market towns, gardens and historic sites of the Cotswolds too: Moreton in Marsh, Hidcote Manor and Burford are all within 20 minutes drive and Chipping Campden and Chedworth Roman Villa within 30.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh is one of the most spectacular destinations for a UK romantic holiday – and its castle is so conveniently placed you can explore a great deal of the surrounding countryside on an Edinburgh campervan holiday too.

Edinburgh castle

Even the setting of this ancient fortress is wild and romantic , high on Castle Hill overlooking the city. The castle is a beautiful place to spend a romantic day at, starting with a climb to the hill and some time gazing at the stunning view below, followed by a wander around the imposing grounds, ornate inner rooms and the Great Hall.

Have lunch or afternoon tea afterwards at The Tea Rooms. sampling quality Scottish produce like smoked salmon or whiskey , or have a snack or sandwich at the Redcoat Café looking out over Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.

Bath

Beautiful Bath should be on any itinerary for a romantic UK holiday. This gorgeous old city is as famous for its lovely Georgian architecture as its historic baths and has about 100 restaurants to pick from for post-sightseeing intimate dinners.

Sights for couples to see include Bath Abbey, the Bath Assembly Rooms, the Grand Pump Room and the Royal Crescent, second only to the Shambles in York as Britain’s most picturesque street.

Fans of Jane Austen’s romantic novels should visit the Jane Austen Centre at Gay Street, showcasing the influence of Bath on Austen’s writing, while the Thermae Bath Spa, home to thermal baths, an open-air rooftop pool, a wellness suite and 27 treatment rooms, is a must-do.

And the best thing about seeing Bath on a caravan holiday? It’s easy to explore Bristol, Somerset and the rest of the southwest from here too – simply hit the road again or book another static from our many options to suit all budgets and tastes.
