Most romantic UK places: Lake District getaway guide

Couple canoeing on a tranquil lake in the Lake District; romantic getaway.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to up the romance, why not take a trip up to one of the most romantic places in the UK? The stunning Lake District.

All the land in England above 900m lies in this region, but the mountains aren’t all this peak district has to offer. Where there are mountains, there are valleys and as the name suggests, the valleys of Lake District National park boast countless lakes formed by millions of years of glacial activity.

The region has inspired many great, creative minds, including William Wordsworth, one of England's pioneers of the romantic age of poetry in the 1700’s, and it’s easy to see why. There’s no need to worry if you aren’t creatively minded, however.

The breathtaking scenery you’ll find in every direction takes all the heavy lifting out of creating your perfect romantic getaway, just pack up and head off. From Scafell Pike; the highest mountain in the UK to Windermere; the largest natural lake in the UK and everything in between. A road trip in a campervan or motorhome through this region will offer a variety of mountain, lake or sea views.

Just in case you needed any more convincing though, let’s take a look at the most beautiful and inspiring locations in one of the most romantic places in the UK.

Most romantic places to visit in Lake District

Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale Water is the most remote of the lakes, and also one of the most beautiful spots in the region. So if you want to get away from it all and have some space to yourselves, this would be at the top of your list.

You’ll want to be self-sufficient and well prepared for a walk, however. This is the only lake that doesn’t have a road running alongside it and very minimal facilities, but the rewards are worth it. There are several large walking trails starting from two different car parks, one of which follows the entire circumference of the lake at just over 10km.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg Stone Circle

The Castlerigg Stone Circle is located near the historic market town of Keswick and is one of 1300 similar stone circles in the British Isles. The real beauty of these mysterious stones comes from where they are geographically located.

Situated in a natural amphitheatre, standing at its centre will provide you with 360-degree views of the surrounding fells, which are some of the largest in the entire Lake District National Park and are an absolute must-see on your romantic break.

Archaeologists and stone circle experts have described Castlerigg Stone Circle as one of the most picturesque and romantic stone circles in the country.

Castlerigg is just a short 7-minute drive from Keswick town centre and is easily accessible by road. Even closer than that though are the Castlerigg Hall and Castlerigg Farm camping grounds offering a wide choice in camping sites. Both boast panoramic views of the surrounding fells towering above the pristine Derwentwater making this one of the most romantic holiday places in the UK.

Blea Tarn

Blea Tarn Lake

Blea Tarn is a hanging valley between Little Langdale and Great Langdale. The valley was formed from years of glacial activity before being cut off from the glacier itself once it shrank due to melting.

Another spot that isn’t too difficult to reach, the conveniently placed car park is a short, all-abilities walking trail away, and that trail extends the entire way around the tarn. Again, the views will be well worth the stroll.

Blea Tarn is a little further from the nearest town of Ambleside, but a very short drive away, you will find the Skelwith Fold Caravan Park. With a heavy focus on sustainable tourism and boasting an abundance of resident wildlife , there aren't many better places for your romantic weekend away.

If you do fancy a trip into Ambleside, bicycle hire and multiple bus services are available. In town, you will find an abundance of pubs, bars and eateries including the Michelin Star rated and historic Old Stamp House.

Aira Force

Aira Force Waterfall

Cascading waterfalls and romance go hand in hand, and just a short 30 minute drive up the road from Ambleside you’ll find Aira Force. This waterfall inspired the romantic poet William Wordsworth so much, that he references it in at least three of his poems.

Now owned by the National Trust, Aira Force is a well-established tourist attraction and the trust maintains many walking paths with disabled access, car parks, bridges, viewing platforms and public facilities for visitors to the area.

Nearby, The Quiet Site Caravan Park provides an outstanding place to stay. Overlooking the lake of Ullswater, they even have their own 12-kilometre walking path to and from the site to Aira Force.

The Quiet Site is also home to The Quiet Bar, one of the finest, but most certainly oldest campsite bars in Britain. The building the bar is located in dates back to the 1500s and serves freshly brewed beer from the local Tirrel Brewery. A perfect place to relax together after a long romantic day of walking.

Windermere

Windermere lake

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England and often quoted as one of the top 10 romantic places to visit in the UK. With countless activities available from boat cruises to hot air ballooning, you won’t be short of great ways to experience the breathtaking scenery on offer here.

Nearby, the town of Windermere provides all kinds of adventure! The Lakes Aquarium has the UK’s largest collection of freshwater fish, fans of Beatrix Potter can take in an indoor recreation of the world as seen in her books, multiple gardens feature local plants and flowers, Wray Castle is a sight to be seen, or even take a ride on a steam train on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

Windermere has quite an abundance of places to stay but camping right on Lake Windermere is one of the most popular, and with good reason.
