What to see and do in Hertfordshire

Although it is largely rural, Hertfordshire is home to a number of tourist attractions that appeal to different interests, no matter who you travel with.

For history buffs, there are several castles and stately homes that are open to the public, including the magnificent Ashridge House, Elvetham Hall and Hatfield House.

St. Albans

St. Albans is a historic city located on the River Ver, 20 miles north of London. St. Albans was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street and is home to a number of significant historical landmarks. The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban, the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain, is located in the city, as is Verulamium Park, the ruins of a Roman town.

Hatfield House

Hatfield House is a country house located on the edge of Hatfield Forest and was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. Hatfield House is currently home to the 7th Marquess of Salisbury and is open to the public for tours and events.

Ashridge Estate

The Ashridge Estate is a country estate that covers 5,000 acres of land and includes a number of historic buildings, such as Ashridge House and Berkhamsted Castle. The estate is also home to a number of scenic walking trails and is popular with cyclists and horse riders.

Berkhamsted Castle

Berkhamsted Castle is a Norman castle built in 1067 and was used as a royal residence by a number of medieval kings, including Henry II and King John. The castle is now open to the public and features a museum about its history.

Knebworth House

Knebworth House is a country house built in 1490 by Sir Robert Lytton. Located near Stevenage it has been home to a number of notable residents over the years, including Edward Bulwer-Lytton, author of The Last Days of Pompeii, and George Edwardes, producer of musical theatre shows such as The Merry Widow.

Verulamium Park

Verulamium Park is a large park located in St Albans and is home to several historical sites, including the ruins of Verulamium Roman City and Verulamium Museum. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling, and picnicking.

Dacorum Heritage Trust Museum

The Dacorum Heritage Trust Museum is in Hemel Hempstead. The museum houses a collection of artefacts relating to the history of Dacorum Borough Council from its formation in 1974 until its dissolution in 2009. The museum also holds exhibitions on local history topics such as the Battle of Bosworth Field and the Gunpowder Plot.

Aldenham Country Park

Aldenham Country Park is a country park located in Elstree. The park covers 500 acres of land and includes a number of features such as a lake, woodland walks and an adventure playground. Aldenham Country Park is also home to a herd of red deer which can often be seen grazing in the park.

Tring Park Mansion

Tring Park Mansion is a country house built in 1682 and has been the home of the National Trust since 1954. The house is open to the public and features extensive gardens that were designed by Capability Brown.

How to hire a campervan, motorhome or caravan in Hertfordshire?

Once you have chosen a van, select your dates and send a booking request to the owner and discuss your trip. Once the owner approves your booking you can make a secure payment via our platform.

When the first day of the booking arrives you'll meet with the owner to pick-up the van (some owners will also drop-off to your holiday location).  They'll guide you through using the van and submit a pre-condition report to our platform.  On return, they submit a post-hire condition report as part of the handover.

How much does it cost to rent a van in Hertfordshire?

Prices for motorhomes and campervans in Hertfordshire range from approximately £40 to £200 per day. Prices are set by the owner, but generally vary depending on how far in advance you book, the time of year, the type of van you choose and its features (beds, kitchen, amenities, etc.).

Licensed drivers must be between 25 and 70 years of age and hold a full and valid licence that is not subject to any restrictions or conditions. Probationary licence holders and learner drivers are not accepted.

What’s required to hire or drive a van in Hertfordshire?

To hire a motorhome or campervan in Hertfordshire, a full and valid driving licence is required. If your licence is from outside the UK, you will also need to present an International Driving Permit (IDP) or equivalent document. A valid credit card is also required for booking.

Can I add additional drivers to the hiring contract?

Adding an additional driver to your booking is possible and is free of charge. We will only need to check the additional driver's driving licence (supplied by the additional driver to us in the form of a DVLA code) to ensure that they are fully covered by our insurance policy.

What is the minimum rental period?

On Camplify, each owner can set the minimum number of rental days, however, most set a minimum rental period of 2-3 days.

What is the speed limit in Hertfordshire?

For vans under 7.5 tonnes, speed limits in Hertfordshire are generally 20 or 30 mph (48 km/h) in urban areas, 50 mph (80 km/h) on single carriageways, 70 mph (113 km/h) on motorways and 60 mph (97 km/h) on dual carriageways.

For cars towing a caravan or trailer as well as for articulated vans or vans towing a trailer, the maximum speed on motorways is reduced to 60 mph (97 km/h).
